Overasselt case widens, suspects remain in custody
The Public Prosecution Service is not yet distinguishing between alleged shooters and other suspects.
Dozens of suspects in the investigation into the deadly violence in Overasselt will remain in custody for the time being. The Public Prosecution Service says investigating the roles of those involved could take months.
In recent days, the Gelderland court has kept dozens of suspects in pre-trial detention for longer. According to the Public Prosecution Service, 32 suspects who appeared before the judicial chamber have been held in custody for the time being. One suspect will be released because, according to the Public Prosecution Service, there was insufficient evidence that he had been at a crime scene or was carrying a firearm.
The allegations are serious. The Public Prosecution Service cites, among other things, murder or manslaughter in concert in connection with the security guard’s death, attempted murder of two police officers, preparing violent offences and possession of firearms. An allegation is not proof, and the suspects have not yet been tried on the substance of the case by a judge.
The violence took place during the night of 31 August to 1 September at a house on Ewijkseweg. A 51-year-old security guard was killed. Two officers were injured when they arrived at the scene and came under fire.
Police searched in and around Overasselt for weapons and other traces. Weapons were also found near a primary school. Police stress that they were not on school grounds. The area is large, and investigators say it cannot be ruled out that further evidence will be found.
According to the Public Prosecution Service, the suspects come from various countries, including the Netherlands and France. Some are being held under restrictions and may have contact only with a lawyer. As a result, the Public Prosecution Service is providing little information about the possible motive and the precise division of roles.
The case also shows why a large number of arrests does not automatically mean that the main suspects have already been identified. The Public Prosecution Service said earlier that the distinction between possible shooters and people involved in another way still has to be established through further investigation. The first substantive hearing has not yet been scheduled.
