De Achterblijvers receives international Emmy nomination
BNNVARA’s youth series is in contention for an award in the Kids: Live-Action category.
The Dutch youth series De Achterblijvers has been nominated for an International Emmy Award. The series is on the list in the Kids: Live-Action category, alongside productions from Chile, the United Kingdom and the Philippines.
The nominations for the 2026 International Emmy Awards were announced on Wednesday by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. De Achterblijvers is one of four nominees in the Kids: Live-Action category.
The nomination lists Dark Alley Pictures, BNNVARA and Black Bee Productions as the parties involved. The nomination therefore recognises the production as a whole; the organisation has not disclosed which individual creators or actors the nomination represents.
According to NPO Start’s description, De Achterblijvers follows a group of young people who remain behind in a village while their friends go on holiday. The storyline revolves, among other things, around shame, financial worries, friendship and the pressure to pretend to lead a different life.
The series was previously offered as a youth programme by NPO Zapp and BNNVARA. The International Emmy Awards are intended for television productions made outside the United States. They are therefore a different award from the American Primetime Emmy Awards.
A total of 64 programmes and individual creators have been nominated this year in sixteen categories. The nominees come from 22 countries. The Netherlands is represented on the official list by De Achterblijvers, alongside titles from countries including Brazil, Germany, Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom.
The nominees will meet in New York in November for a television forum and presentations. The winners will be announced on 23 November at the 54th International Emmy Awards in New York. The nomination is therefore certain, but the series has not yet won an award.
