Discord rolls out age checks with several verification options
The platform wants to shield teenagers better and says most users will not need to undergo a check.
Discord is introducing new age checks for features and content considered age-restricted. The platform says more than 90 per cent of users will not be asked for separate confirmation, because it first tries to determine an age group automatically.
Discord announced the changes on Tuesday. According to the company, accounts will be placed in either the group of teenagers aged 13 to 17 or that of adults aged 18 and over. Certain age-restricted spaces, content and settings will be shielded from teenagers. Ordinary messages, conversations and servers without age restrictions will remain available, according to Discord.
According to Discord, the automatic estimate is based on signals about the account, such as its age, the types of servers on which someone is active and general usage patterns. The company says the system does not analyse private messages, conversations or other content to determine age. According to Discord, an automatic classification can be supplemented with a check if the system is not sufficiently certain.
Discord lists several options for that check. Among other things, users can use an age estimate via a selfie, an identity document, a credit-card check or an age signal from Apple or Google services. Discord says it does not itself receive biometric data, identity documents or credit-card details. The external verification providers are expected to delete the data once the check has been completed.
That explanation does not resolve the fundamental debate. An age group can influence what someone sees on the platform and which settings are available. Users must therefore trust both Discord’s classification model and the security and deletion procedures of the external providers.
The timing fits with broader European and national efforts to better protect minors online. The European Commission is working on privacy-friendly age verification that can also be used to comply with the Digital Services Act. That European approach aims to prove age without platforms necessarily receiving a user’s full identity.
Discord says the global rollout is taking place in phases and that users can view their age group in their account settings. For users in the Netherlands, the announcement therefore does not automatically mean that everyone has to upload proof of identity today. According to the available information, the exact check someone receives depends on the feature, the region and the outcome of Discord’s automatic estimate.
One story, several perspectives
What is established
- Discord distinguishes between teenager and adult accounts.
- The company says most users will not undergo a separate check.
- Depending on the method chosen, external providers may process a selfie, identity document or other age signal.
- The European Union is promoting privacy-friendly age verification.
Left
Arguments Age protection is necessary, but platforms must not build a new infrastructure for surveillance through behavioural profiles or biometrics. The preference is for anonymous, public or independent age signals that share as little data as possible.
Values Privacy, children’s rights, digital autonomy and limiting the power of technology companies.
Consequences Strict data minimisation can provide protection without permanent profiling, but some age-restricted features may become harder to access.
Centre
Arguments A proportionate system can protect minors without routinely asking everyone for proof of identity. Independent audits, clear appeal procedures and a choice between several verification methods are necessary.
Values A balance between safety, privacy, feasibility and legal protection.
Consequences A phased approach can increase trust, but requires oversight of providers and continuous monitoring of incorrect classifications.
Right
Arguments Platforms have a responsibility to protect children from harmful content and contact with adults. Age checks are justified if they remain focused on high-risk features and do not restrict adults’ normal use.
Values Safety, the responsibility of parents and platforms, and enforcement of rules.
Consequences More checks can reduce risks to minors, but an overly broad approach could drive users towards less transparent services.
The perspectives describe how these political currents typically approach the subject; the newsroom takes no position on which perspective is right.
