Samsung rolls out One UI 9 in phases
The Android 17-based software will reach recent Galaxy devices first, followed by other devices.
Samsung has begun rolling out One UI 9. The update started with recent foldable phones and the Galaxy S26 series, but is being made available in stages by model, region and provider.
One UI 9 is Samsung’s new software layer for Galaxy devices and is based on Android 17. Samsung announced on 16 September that the rollout to the Galaxy S26, S26+ and S26 Ultra would begin. The software was already available on the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Fold8 and Flip8 at that point.
The company is opting for a phased rollout. This means that a device will not receive a notification everywhere on the same day. Samsung says availability may vary by device and that the update will gradually reach more phones and tablets.
Some of the improvements centre on Galaxy AI. The My FanCam feature can follow a selected person in a video and reframe the image. Now Brief also gets more customisable cards, while features for interpreting, document scanning, voice recordings and device management are being expanded.
Samsung is also linking the new software to security and privacy. The manufacturer mentions improvements including warnings about malware, unknown apps and unnecessary permissions. Some features require a Samsung account or a network connection.
The update is therefore not a uniform upgrade for every Galaxy user. Features may depend on hardware, country, language and account type. Samsung also states that the accuracy of some AI features is not guaranteed and that certain features do not work in every video or situation.
For users, the rollout timetable is particularly relevant. Those with a compatible device can check for the update manually through the settings, but not receiving a notification does not automatically mean that a device is being skipped. It may also mean that Samsung has not yet completed the regional or technical checks.
