Macklemore announces benefit tour for Palestinians
The US rapper will play in Dublin, Paris and London in October and says all proceeds will be donated to aid organisations.
Macklemore has announced a new tour whose proceeds, according to the organisers, will go to humanitarian organisations supporting Palestinians. The first three concerts are scheduled for Dublin, Paris and London.
The US rapper announced the so-called Free Palestine Tour on Thursday. According to concert organiser Messina Touring Group, the first show will take place on 26 October at the 3Arena in Dublin. This will be followed by the Accor Arena in Paris on 29 October and the OVO Arena Wembley in London on 30 October.
According to the organiser, all proceeds from the concerts will go to organisations providing humanitarian and medical assistance to Palestinians. The list includes Anera, Gaza Soup Kitchen, HEAL Palestine, Medical Aid for Palestinians, the Palestine Children's Relief Fund and UNRWA USA. The precise distribution of the income is not yet known.
The tour follows shortly after Macklemore was removed from Ed Sheeran's US stadium tour. During a performance in New Jersey, Macklemore had called for support for Palestine. According to the rapper, several venues had told the organiser that they did not want a concert with him to take place.
Sheeran later said he was not responsible for the decision to remove Macklemore. The controversy subsequently took on a broader cultural significance: several other artists withdrew from the tour, while Macklemore wants to use his own platform for political support and fundraising.
The first European performances are therefore not only regular concerts, but also public gatherings centred on a political issue. This could generate additional attention and income for the aid organisations involved, but it also makes the performances dependent on the willingness of venues, artists and audiences to carry that political message.
Macklemore has not yet announced a complete list of artists. US dates are also still to follow. The announced proceeds are a commitment by the organisation; so far, no independent reporting has been published on ticket sales, costs or the final amounts received by each aid organisation.
