Berlin documentation centre for forced labour turns twenty
The memorial centre in Schöneweide marks the anniversary with talks, tours and a new exhibition.
The Dokumentationszentrum NS-Zwangsarbeit in Berlin is twenty years old. The centre is using the anniversary to draw renewed attention to the history of Nazi forced labour and how it is passed on.
The centre in the Schöneweide district opened in 2006 on the site of a former forced-labour camp. According to the organisation, parts of the former barracks have been preserved. The centre presents research, personal histories and information about the scale of forced labour under National Socialism.
The anniversary day comprises speeches by political and civil-society representatives, a panel discussion and guided tours. Depots and special objects will also be explained. The organisation presents the centre not only as a museum, but also as a place for education, encounter and debate about remembrance culture.
To mark the anniversary, the exhibition Wie erinnern wir? Wie erinnerst du? is being presented. Museumsportal Berlin describes it as an exhibition about the changing meaning of remembrance. According to the portal, the exhibition runs from late September 2026 to May 2027.
The emphasis on remembrance is not only historical. The centre wants visitors to reflect on how stories of persecution and forced labour are passed between generations. It combines historical sources with guided tours, discussions and artistic projects.
The anniversary in itself says nothing about visitor numbers, social impact or the effectiveness of the educational programme. It does show, however, that twenty years after opening, the institution is broadening its role: from a place where historical information is preserved to a public space where the meaning of remembrance is actively discussed.
