PostmarketOS is now called Nura
The Linux project is changing its name to make clear that it also supports new phones.
The mobile Linux project postmarketOS has changed its name to Nura. The developers say the old name was too long, difficult to pronounce and had become less suitable.
The name change was announced on 27 September during a project conference. The software itself is not changing its foundations: Nura remains an operating system for mobile devices based on Alpine Linux.
PostmarketOS was launched in 2017 with the aim of keeping phones usable for longer after manufacturers stop providing updates. The project focuses on Linux on smartphones and aims to give devices a lifespan of around ten years. In practice, that is only possible for models with sufficient hardware support.
According to the developers, the old name was difficult to explain to new users. The combination of lower-case and capital letters was also often written incorrectly. In addition, the team felt the name was less suitable because the system is not only installed retrospectively on existing phones: PINE64 sold phones that already had postmarketOS installed.
The new name Nura is derived from nuraghe, a type of prehistoric stone tower in Sardinia. The developers associate these structures with durability and a long lifespan. More than three hundred proposals are said to have been considered for the name. The project has submitted a trademark application.
The website has moved to nura.eco. The recognisable arrow logo is largely retained, with minor changes to the spacing between the arrows. Documentation and software may continue to contain references to postmarketOS for the time being, until contributors have updated them.
The name change is primarily a branding and communications decision. It does not automatically bring new phones, longer support or better drivers. That technical support remains a major obstacle for mobile Linux projects, precisely because manufacturers often keep hardware closed.
For users, therefore, the main short-term change is likely to be the name. Those managing scripts, documentation or references to the project may encounter both names for some time. The project ultimately intends to continue entirely under the name Nura.
