AMD buys World Labs for $8.2 billion
The chipmaker wants greater control over spatial-intelligence and robotics models through Fei-Fei Li’s AI lab.
AMD is acquiring World Labs for approximately $8.2 billion, paying for the takeover entirely in shares. Fei-Fei Li’s AI lab develops models that can build and simulate three-dimensional worlds; the transaction is due to be completed later this year, subject to approvals.
AMD announced the agreement on Monday. It is a definitive agreement, but not a completed acquisition. The value is linked to AMD shares and may therefore still change before the transaction closes. AMD expects the deal to be completed by the end of 2026.
World Labs focuses on so-called spatial intelligence. According to AMD’s description, the company’s models can generate, reconstruct and simulate interactive three-dimensional environments based on text, images and video. The lab is also working on applications for robot learning and simulation.
Following the acquisition, the team will continue working on AI research, according to AMD. Co-founder and chief executive Fei-Fei Li will become AMD’s executive vice-president and chief scientist. She will report to Lisa Su, the chipmaker’s chair and chief executive.
AMD links the purchase to its broader AI-infrastructure strategy. The company sells processors, graphics chips, networking products and software, among other things. Through World Labs, AMD is acquiring expertise in the models and applications that run on such systems, bringing hardware development and model research closer together.
The purchase also fits into the competition for a larger share of the rapidly growing AI-computing market. A Reuters report, distributed via Boursorama, describes the deal as an investment in physical AI: systems that not only process text, but also model an environment and act within it. That is a description of the strategic direction, not evidence that such systems are already broadly commercially viable.
Important questions remain unanswered. The sources provide no financial forecast for World Labs, no details on the number of employees and no guarantee that the lab’s technology will lead to higher sales of AMD chips. Regulators must also still assess the transaction. The acquisition is therefore primarily a major strategic choice, not direct evidence of a technical breakthrough.
