Paulien Cornelisse dies aged fifty
The writer and cabaret performer became known for her observations on language, behaviour and everyday life.
Paulien Cornelisse has died at the age of fifty. Over more than two decades, the writer, cabaret performer and programme-maker built a varied body of work in theatre, literature and television.
Cornelisse was born in Amsterdam in 1976 and began performing cabaret in the late 1990s. She was active with Comedytrain, among others, and initially worked with Irene van der Aart. Her style was characterised by dry observations, precise language and attention to small social awkwardnesses.
Her major breakthrough as a writer came with Taal is zeg maar echt mijn ding. The book made everyday language and communication the subject of humour and became a widely read success. It was followed by, among others, En dan nog iets, Taal voor de leuk and De verwarde cavia.
Cornelisse continually moved between different disciplines. She created theatre programmes, wrote columns, published fiction and contributed to television programmes. For VPRO, she made a series about Japan, a country and culture she also spoke about more frequently in her work.
In theatre, she worked with Nationale Opera & Ballet, among others. She was involved there in productions including Hallo Aarde, Maar Ondertussen and Operetta Land. She continued to develop new projects later on, although performances had to be adapted or cancelled because of her health.
Cornelisse became known to a large television audience as a contestant, presenter and panellist. She won Wie is de Mol? and was involved in Tokidoki. In her public appearances, she remained recognisable above all for her observant way of looking at things: neither loud nor moralistic, but focused on the strange rules people impose on one another.
Her death marks the loss of a creator who did not use language as decoration, but as the subject itself. Cornelisse showed that a small formulation, an awkward habit or a silent moment could be enough for a story. Her work can therefore still be found across books, performances, columns and television.
