Tornado sweeps across Ulladulla, damaging buildings
Emergency services received dozens of reports from the town on the southern coast of New South Wales.
A tornado struck parts of Ulladulla on Australia’s southern coast on Saturday. Roofs, trees and power lines were damaged as heavy showers and strong winds continued across New South Wales.
The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed, according to ABC News, that a tornado passed through Ulladulla. The town lies on the southern coast of the state of New South Wales. Shortly after 1 p.m. local time, a warning was issued for the area for severe thunderstorms, strong winds, large hail and heavy rain.
The State Emergency Service reported that by 5 p.m. emergency services had received more than one hundred reports across the state. Nearly thirty of them came from Ulladulla. Responders received reports of damaged roofs, dislodged roof tiles, skylights, fallen trees and downed power lines.
An incident team was set up in Ulladulla. Teams from Nowra and surrounding areas were deployed to help residents and owners of damaged buildings. The storm cut power and other services in several places in the surrounding area.
Problems also arose elsewhere in New South Wales. Emergency services reported storm damage and localised flooding, including around Albury and in other areas in the south and centre of the state. The effects varied from place to place because the showers moved over the area in a short space of time.
The NSW State Emergency Service warns that tornadoes can form during severe thunderstorms and cause significant damage. Warnings for heavy rain and damaging winds remained in force for Saturday evening. The service urged residents to follow warnings and avoid damaged buildings and downed lines.
The total damage had not yet been assessed on Saturday afternoon. The reporting consulted contains no complete inventory of damaged homes, businesses or any injuries. It is clear, however, that the tornado made a local incident team and dozens of emergency operations in Ulladulla necessary.
