The North Bridge in Kyiv was damaged by a Russian air strike on Saturday, Mayor Vitali Klitschko reports. Traffic across the bridge was halted; several people were killed and wounded in Kharkiv, according to regional authorities.
The attack on the North Bridge damaged the road surface and the overhead wires for trolleybuses. According to the Kyiv municipality, the connection from the eastern to the western bank was closed. Emergency services went to the bridge and public transport was temporarily diverted.
The new attack follows two days in which Russian drones had already hit other bridges over the Dnipro in Kyiv. As a result, three of the capital’s six road bridges were entirely or partially closed. This caused traffic problems between the densely populated eastern bank and the centre on the western bank.
Russia confirmed that it carried out the attack. The Russian Ministry of Defence said the bridge was being used for military logistics. Ukrainian authorities spoke of damage to urban infrastructure. Independent verification of Russia’s military claim about the bridge’s use is not available.
In Kharkiv and surrounding areas, five people were killed and dozens of others wounded in attacks involving drones and guided bombs, according to regional governor Oleh Syniehubov. The figures come from Ukrainian authorities and could not be independently verified.
The attacks make everyday travel in Kyiv more vulnerable without establishing that a bridge has become completely unusable. The municipality is attempting to divert bus and trolleybus routes. The consequences for the structural traffic capacity will only become clear after inspections and any repair work.
The incident follows the attacks on Kyiv bridges previously reported by De Vector. What is new is that the North Bridge has also been hit and that the traffic restrictions are continuing for several days. According to AP, the attack forms part of a broader Russian campaign against infrastructure in and around the capital, while Russia says it wants to strike military logistics.
