Ukraine says its air defences neutralised 131 Russian drones overnight from Friday to Saturday. Meanwhile, international sources report fresh damage in Kyiv and deaths caused by Russian attacks.
According to the Ukrainian air force, Russia launched 157 drones towards Ukraine from Friday evening onwards. Of these, 45 were reportedly of the new jet-powered type, according to the Ukrainian account. The remaining aircraft consisted of Shahed-style attack drones and decoy drones.
The Ukrainian authorities say 131 aircraft were shot down or suppressed by electronic means. The figure therefore covers different forms of air defence, not only drones that were physically shot down. The account was provisional and could still be amended.
According to Ukrainian information, the attack hit twelve locations. Damage caused by falling debris was reported at five sites. So-called Banderol munitions were also reported in the Odesa region, a relatively new type of loitering weapon powered by jet engines.
The Associated Press reported that Russian attacks in Ukraine had killed at least six people and damaged the Northern Bridge in Kyiv. Traffic across the bridge consequently came to a standstill. According to AP, several bridges in the capital had been wholly or partly closed in recent days.
The new drones are increasing the pressure on Ukraine’s air defences. Jet-powered aircraft fly faster than older propeller drones, giving defenders less time to prepare an interception. AP previously reported that Ukrainian companies are therefore working on cheaper interceptors and systems that use artificial intelligence.
The development fits into Russia’s broader campaign against Ukrainian infrastructure, which earlier this week also caused problems with energy supplies and traffic in Kyiv. Ukraine’s figures come from a party to the conflict and cannot be fully independently verified; damage and casualties are therefore reported separately on the basis of international coverage.
One story, several perspectives
What is established
- Ukraine reported that 131 of 157 drones were shot down or suppressed during a night-time attack.
- The Associated Press reported deaths and damage to a bridge in Kyiv.
- Ukraine’s figures for the attack cannot be fully independently verified.
Left
Arguments Emphasises that Ukraine needs protection against attacks and that support for air defences should primarily protect civilians and essential infrastructure. Diplomacy and an end to the war remain the goal, because a further arms race would increase the human and economic damage.
Values International law, the protection of civilians and solidarity with a country under attack.
Consequences More military support could protect lives and infrastructure, but could also extend and intensify the war if diplomatic channels are weakened.
Centre
Arguments Wants to strengthen air defences, but with clear oversight of costs, effectiveness and escalation risks. European countries should help Ukraine without presenting unverified military claims as established facts.
Values Institutional reliability, proportionality and shared European responsibility.
Consequences A combination of defence, verification and diplomacy could increase resilience without automatically opting for further expansion of the war.
Right
Arguments Sees deterrence and a strong national defence industry as a necessary response to Russian pressure. Under this approach, Ukraine should receive sufficient resources not only to repel attacks, but also to make clear to Russia that further escalation would carry high costs.
Values National security, military credibility and the protection of Europe’s external border.
Consequences Faster production of interceptors and broader military support could curb Russia’s attack capability, but would increase the risk of reciprocal retaliation.
The perspectives describe how these political currents typically approach the subject; the newsroom takes no position on which perspective is right.

The text distinguishes Ukrainian claims from independently reported consequences. The technical explanation of jet-powered drones is based on AP reporting.
- confirmed According to Ukraine, Russia launched 157 drones, 45 of them jet-powered. — Ukrinform cites the Ukrainian air force for this. source
- confirmed Ukraine reported that 131 drones had been shot down or suppressed. — This is explicitly presented as a provisional Ukrainian account. source
- confirmed According to AP, Russian attacks killed at least six people and damaged the Northern Bridge in Kyiv. — AP reports both consequences of the attacks. source
- confirmed Jet-powered drones leave less time for interception. — AP describes the higher speed and the resulting pressure on Ukraine’s air defences. source
Editor's note
The drone figures are Ukrainian military figures and are attributed as such. AP confirms the broader attack, damage to a bridge and deaths, but not every detail of the Ukrainian tally.Sources
