Stray Kids does not submit music for Grammys
The South Korean group follows BTS, which earlier objected to the new category for Asian pop music.
Stray Kids has not submitted music for the 69th Grammy Awards. Record label JYP Entertainment confirmed that the group allowed the deadline to pass, several months after BTS declined to participate for the same reason.
JYP Entertainment confirmed to Korean media that Stray Kids submitted no work for Grammy consideration this year. The submission period for the 2027 edition ran from 7 July to 21 August 2026.
The decision follows the introduction of the Best Asian Pop Music Performance category. The Recording Academy says the award is intended to recognise artistic quality in Asian pop music, including K-pop, J-pop and C-pop. One condition is that the music must contain a meaningful proportion in an Asian language.
BTS announced in July that it would not submit music. The group said at the time that music should preferably not be categorised on the basis of region or language. The Recording Academy responded that the new category was intended to highlight the growth and diversity of Asian pop music.
According to the Academy, a new category does not rule out artists also being put forward in general Grammy categories. To do so, however, artists must submit music themselves within the stipulated period. Without a submission, a group cannot be considered for a nomination.
Stray Kids' decision does not in itself say exactly what reform the group wants. JYP has confirmed that no work was submitted, but the group has not provided a separate detailed explanation in the sources consulted. It is therefore more precise to speak of not taking part in the submission process than of a formal boycott of the ceremony.
The issue touches on a broader debate about representation. A separate category can give visibility to music that is less readily recognised in existing genres. At the same time, artists may fear that such a category places Asian pop music outside the main general awards. The first edition of the new category therefore carries significance, even if major groups do not take part.
