Death in severe storm, Catalonia maintains alert level
Catalan authorities report one death and thousands of emergency calls as rivers rise rapidly.
Follow-up to: Record rainfall disrupts Barcelona and halts train services Sunday, 4 October 2026, 04:56
Severe storms in Catalonia claimed a life on Sunday. The regional government warns that the situation is not yet over and is keeping restrictions on traffic and activities in force.
President Salvador Illa confirmed on Sunday that someone had died in Tordera, north of Barcelona, as a result of the severe weather. Catalan emergency services had received more than 5,100 reports by Sunday morning, mainly from Barcelona and surrounding municipalities.
Rainfall was exceptionally intense in several places. According to the Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya, 190.8 millimetres of rain was recorded at Barcelona-Raval on Saturday; 170.3 millimetres fell at Barcelona-Zona Universitària. Rainfall in Granollers and Malgrat de Mar increased further on Sunday.
The large volume of water caused rivers and streams to rise rapidly. The authorities warned, among other things, about the Besòs and sent a mobile alert to parts of Barcelona, Girona and the coastal region. Residents were advised to limit travel and avoid areas vulnerable to flooding.
Rail services in Catalonia remained largely suspended. Roads, air links and local activities were also disrupted. Emergency responders rescued people from vehicles and checked locations where water had accumulated rapidly.
According to the regional authorities, the weather situation is shifting towards Girona, meaning further disruption remains possible. The current figures are still provisional: emergency services may revise the tally of victims, damage and disruptions later.
The new death is an development on top of the flooding and transport problems reported earlier. A definitive assessment of the cause and any role played by climate change is not yet available; the rainfall totals measured were, however, recorded directly by the Catalan meteorological institute.
One story, several perspectives
What is established
- At least one death has been reported as a result of the severe weather.
- Exceptionally heavy rain fell at several measuring stations.
- Rivers rose rapidly and the authorities restricted traffic and activities.
- The meteorological and hydrological situation was not yet over on Sunday.
Left
Arguments The emphasis is on public protection, climate adaptation and investment in water storage, warning systems and public transport. During extreme weather, safety and accessibility should carry more weight than short-term economic continuity.
Values Collective responsibility, protection of vulnerable residents and public facilities.
Consequences Higher public spending and stricter rules on construction and travel may be necessary, but could limit damage and inequality in future disasters.
Centre
Arguments The institutional approach combines timely warnings, temporary restrictions and subsequent evaluation. Measures should be proportionate and based on measurement data, local risks and the capacity of emergency services.
Values Carefulness, practicality and trust in expert authorities.
Consequences This may mean that restrictions differ locally and that structural adjustments follow only after evaluation.
Right
Arguments The government's first task is immediate safety and enforcement of existing rules; structural climate spending should not automatically be inferred from a single storm. Citizens and municipalities also bear responsibility for preparedness and risk choices.
Values Personal responsibility, efficiency and restrained government.
Consequences A more limited role for new regulation can contain costs, but increases the risk that existing vulnerabilities remain if extreme rainfall becomes more frequent.
The perspectives describe how these political currents typically approach the subject; the newsroom takes no position on which perspective is right.
