Mollie expands bank payments
The payment processor launches a new Pay by Bank service alongside iDEAL and other payment methods.
Mollie is bringing an updated Pay by Bank service to market on Monday. It will allow customers to pay directly from their bank account; the service will initially be available in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
According to Mollie, the service is built on technology from GoCardless, which the payment company acquired earlier this year. At checkout, consumers choose a bank, log in to their own banking environment and confirm the payment. No separate Mollie consumer app is required for this.
Mollie says the service has direct connections to more than 2,500 banks and enables payments in three steps. These are company claims about the technical setup and user experience; public sources about the launch contain no independent comparison with existing payment methods.
The service is not the same as a new version of iDEAL. Mollie already offers iDEAL and iDEAL | Wero and presents Pay by Bank as a separate payment method for account-to-account payments. For online shops, this means an additional option in the payment environment, not automatically a replacement for iDEAL.
One difference lies in how the service is used. According to Mollie, Pay by Bank can combine a one-off payment with recording an IBAN for future direct debits. This may be particularly relevant for subscription services and invoicing, but success depends on consent, bank support and how businesses process the data.
Mollie says the service offers guaranteed payments and immediate payouts. The documentation states that the speed also depends on the bank and the type of transfer used. For some payments, processing may therefore take longer than the marketing term ‘immediate’ suggests.
The launch is part of the competition among payment processors to make European bank payments less dependent on cards. Mollie wants to expand the service to the rest of Europe in the first half of 2027. As the public information mainly consists of Mollie’s own announcement and documentation, it has not yet been independently established how many consumers or online shops will actually use the service.
