NAC seeks severe punishment after fireworks in away section
Five people were injured during the away match against Vitesse; one suspect was arrested.
NAC Breda says it wants to take the strongest possible measures against the person who set off fireworks in the away section during the match against Vitesse. According to the club, three supporters and two stewards were injured; police arrested a suspect.
The fireworks went off in a toilet in the away section at the GelreDome during half-time on Saturday. NAC reported on Monday that five people had been injured. The club did not disclose what injuries they sustained, nor did it release the identity of the arrested suspect.
According to NAC, there were also incidents between groups of supporters after the match. Police had to intervene. The club is investigating the events together with Vitesse and the local three-way partnership, in which the council, police and Public Prosecution Service work together.
Managing director Remco Oversier says NAC wants the person behind the fireworks incident to be punished as severely as possible, but that punishment has not yet been determined. The club has contacted those injured and says it will provide aftercare where necessary.
The case comes at a time when football clubs and authorities are trying to take tougher action against fireworks in stadiums. The KNVB can hold clubs disciplinarily accountable for supporters’ behaviour, while police and prosecutors investigate whether individual supporters can face criminal prosecution. These proceedings are separate.
NAC has not yet announced any new stadium bans or other definitive measures. Nor has the KNVB publicly announced a decision on this specific incident. The eventual consequences will depend on the police investigation, the available camera footage and the assessments of the football association and the Public Prosecution Service.
