Further youths were detained after unrest in Hoogeveen city centre on Tuesday evening. Police deployed several units and checked groups in and around Hoofdstraat.
Police took action after groups of youths gathered in the city centre again. Regional broadcasters reported that several people had been detained. The exact numbers and the suspicions against the detained youths were not yet known on Tuesday evening.
The new unrest follows several days of nuisance. According to the municipality, this included riding around on fatbikes, intimidating passers-by, and setting off and throwing fireworks. The municipality says police and enforcement officers have already had to intervene several times to restore public order.
Mayor Martijn Breukelman previously announced additional measures. CCTV surveillance was introduced in the city centre, and the municipality is working with police, enforcement officers and youth workers. Parents and young people are also spoken to when they are involved in the nuisance.
According to earlier regional reports, eight underage youths were detained, dozens of fines were issued and two fatbikes were seized. In addition, three area bans were imposed. As the youths are minors, their names and other identifying details are not being made public.
The municipality stresses that enforcement and prevention must go hand in hand. The mayor says the city centre must remain accessible and safe for residents, businesses and visitors, but that it has not yet been established what the criminal-law consequences of the new detentions will be. Police are investigating the individual incidents.

- Further detentions followed on Tuesday evening.
Left
Arguments The emphasis is on prevention, youth work and cooperation with parents and schools. Enforcement is necessary, but must remain targeted and should not treat an entire age group as if it were under suspicion.
Values Equal treatment, opportunities for young people and proportionate government action.
Consequences Heavier repression without support could weaken trust in the authorities and displace the problems.
Centre
Arguments The municipality must take visible action against intimidation and fireworks, while assessing for each young person which administrative, criminal or social approach is appropriate.
Values Public order, proportionality and practicality.
Consequences A combination of surveillance, area bans and youth work could restore calm, but requires sustained effort.
Right
Arguments Residents and businesses must get their city centre back. Anyone who crosses the line must be dealt with quickly and visibly; parents bear responsibility for their children’s behaviour.
Values Safety, responsibility and authority.
Consequences Swift sanctions can act as a deterrent, but broad or prolonged bans can also affect young people who were not involved in the incidents.
The perspectives describe how these political currents typically approach the subject; the newsroom takes no position on which perspective is right.
