Musk crosses the one-trillion-dollar mark again
The estimated value of his stakes in SpaceX and Tesla rose sharply on Monday.
Elon Musk once again has an estimated fortune of more than one trillion dollars. The increase was mainly driven by higher prices for SpaceX and Tesla, but the amount consists largely of shares and is therefore highly volatile.
Forbes estimated Musk’s fortune at one trillion dollars on Monday, after shares in SpaceX and Tesla rose at the opening of the US stock market. According to Forbes, his fortune was therefore 30.6 billion dollars higher than on the previous trading day. Another wealth index, Bloomberg’s, put it at approximately 1.04 trillion dollars, according to The Straits Times.
This is not money Musk has sitting in a bank account. The calculations are based on the market value of his stakes and options in companies. If share prices fall, the estimated fortune can therefore quickly drop below the threshold again. That also happened earlier this year, shortly after Musk was first classified as a trillionaire.
SpaceX was listed on the stock market in June and received a very high valuation at its IPO. The share price rose again on Monday after analysts at Morgan Stanley called the stock relatively inexpensive within the aerospace and artificial intelligence sectors. Forbes also wrote that a successful Starship launch last week had strengthened optimism around SpaceX.
Tesla also contributed to the increase. The company reported quarterly sales last week that were higher than analysts had expected. Tesla’s share price continued to rise on Monday, although the company remains heavily dependent on expectations surrounding future models, autonomous features and the further growth of electric cars.
SpaceX’s valuation remains controversial. Associated Press reported at the time of the IPO that the company was suffering heavy losses and that several future plans still relied on unproven technology. Analysts at Morningstar considered the initial valuation significantly too high at the time. A higher share price therefore says more about investors’ expectations than about realised profits.
For shareholders, the rise is both an opportunity and a risk. Musk has considerable influence over several companies, and his fortune is heavily concentrated in a handful of shares. The new trillion-dollar status is therefore primarily a snapshot of the market, not a stable measure of income.
