The S&P 500 closed above 7,800 points for the first time on Tuesday. The index rose 0.6 per cent to 7,818.93 points, helped by higher earnings expectations, strong technology shares and lower bond yields.
The rise confirms the record run on Wall Street, which had already begun earlier this week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.5 per cent and closed at 51,521.28 points. The Nasdaq, which includes a relatively large number of technology companies, rose 0.4 per cent to 27,599.79 points and also reached a record.
Investors responded in part to the expectation that companies can further increase their profits. Interest in shares benefiting from investment in artificial intelligence remained strong. At the same time, yields on US government bonds fell, which can make shares more attractive because future corporate profits are discounted less heavily.
According to Associated Press, Constellation Energy also helped the market after announcing a long-term electricity contract with Google. Potato producer Lamb Weston rose after reporting a better result than analysts had expected. Such company announcements contributed to optimism about the coming earnings season.
The record level does not mean that all concerns in the financial markets have disappeared. Investors continue to watch inflation, energy prices, US interest rates and developments in the bond market. The rise is also highly concentrated among large technology and growth companies, meaning a limited number of businesses have a relatively large influence on the index.
According to AP, the S&P 500 is up 14.2 per cent this year. That is a snapshot of share prices and not a direct measure of households’ purchasing power or daily income. For Dutch investors, a higher US stock market can nevertheless have an impact through pension funds, investment funds and the value of international share portfolios.
