Claude comes directly to Google Workspace
Anthropic’s assistant can edit documents, spreadsheets and presentations in a public beta.
Anthropic is bringing Claude to Google Docs, Sheets and Slides through a new extension. The feature is available in a public beta for paid Claude subscriptions and is a direct competitor to Google’s built-in Gemini assistant.
Users can open Claude in a sidebar next to the file they are working on. The assistant can rewrite text, structure documents, create formulas and clean up data in spreadsheets. In presentations, Claude can create new slides or modify existing ones.
The extension also works the other way round. From Claude, users can create and edit Google files through separate connectors for Docs, Sheets and Slides, according to Anthropic. Those connectors are also available as a beta feature.
The features are available to users with Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise subscriptions. Organisations can centrally allow or block the extension through their Google Workspace administration. As a result, availability within companies also depends in part on the administrator’s policy.
Anthropic says that changes remain visible in the file’s version history. The company also states that the contents of files are not used to train its models. These statements come from Anthropic itself; organisations must check for themselves which access rights and connectors they activate.
Google already has its own Gemini features in Docs, Sheets and Slides. Claude is therefore not entering an empty field, but is trying to reach users where they already create and share their documents.
The extension shifts competition between AI companies further away from standalone chat windows and towards office software. For companies, this means it is not only about the quality of answers, but also about access management, the auditability of changes and the question of which assistant gets access to corporate files.
