Fire beneath Olympic Stadium keeps firefighters busy for hours
The fire spread from a crawl space and was difficult to reach.
A fire burned for hours on Thursday evening in a car park beneath the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam. It produced a great deal of smoke, and the seat of the fire proved difficult for firefighters to reach.
The fire broke out at the end of the afternoon in the complex in Amsterdam-Zuid. Plumes of smoke were visible from a long way away. The stadium was evacuated and the emergency services scaled up their response to bring the fire under control.
According to a fire service spokesperson, the fire was in or near a crawl space. The flames spread through cavity walls, making it difficult to establish exactly where the seat of the fire was. The fire service deployed several vehicles and pieces of equipment for incidents involving hazardous substances.
Residents reported a pungent smell which they described as chemical. The fire service carried out measurements to establish whether the smoke was dangerous to the surrounding area. Bystanders’ observations in themselves say nothing about the composition of the smoke or its health risks.
Later that evening, the emergency services announced that there was no indication that cars had caused the fire. Nothing has yet been established about the precise cause. The extent of the damage was also not yet definitively known at around 10.40pm.
The fire led to a GRIP 1 escalation. Under this arrangement, the fire service, police, ambulance service and municipality work from a joint coordination structure. Such an escalation says something about the cooperation required, and not automatically about the number of victims or the seriousness of any injuries.
The incident affects the use of the stadium and car park for as long as investigations and inspection work continue. After extinguishing the fire, the fire service must also check whether hidden smouldering spots remain and whether parts of the structure can be accessed safely. The cause is not expected to become clear until after the technical investigation.
