Microsoft has announced new Windows computers that perform demanding AI calculations partly locally. The Surface Laptop Ultra will be available from 16 October and is being offered alongside other devices as part of Microsoft's strategy for hybrid intelligence.
The new laptop uses Nvidia's RTX Spark platform and, according to Microsoft, can be equipped with up to 128 gigabytes of shared memory. The company says the device can run AI models with more than 120 billion parameters locally. Microsoft is therefore targeting developers, designers and other users who do not want to run large models exclusively in data centres.
The announcement is a new step in the shift of AI services towards the PC. In an earlier report, De Vector said that Microsoft wants AI agents to work directly on computers more often. The new hardware gives that strategy more computing power, but does not automatically make local execution cheaper, safer or available to every user.
Microsoft calls the approach hybrid intelligence: simple or privacy-sensitive tasks can be performed locally, while more demanding assignments go to the cloud. According to the company, new Windows features should make the transition between the two environments easier. The Copilot features will be rolled out over the coming months and may vary by device, market and chip.
Alongside the Surface Laptop Ultra, Microsoft announced a Surface RTX Spark Dev Box. Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo and MSI are also bringing computers with the new Nvidia platform to market. Microsoft is thereby attempting to create a broader market for so-called builder PCs, intended for local model development, image generation and video editing.
For now, the performance claims come mainly from Microsoft and Nvidia. Microsoft compares the devices with a MacBook Pro under specific test conditions and with pre-production models. Actual performance depends on model size, software, memory and energy consumption. The key development is therefore not one laptop, but the attempt to move AI computing power from data centres to workplaces and consumer devices.
