Batavus, KOGA and Babboe relaunched under Dutech
Administrators sell the brand rights and parts of the activities of the bankrupt Accell to the Singaporean group.
The bicycle brands Batavus, KOGA and Babboe are being relaunched under Dutech. The administrators of bankrupt Accell are selling the brand rights, IT platform and Hungarian activities to the new owner.
According to ANP, some of the employees may also transfer to Dutech. The sale means that the three well-known Dutch brand names will not disappear after the bankruptcy of their parent company, although it is not yet known exactly how many employees will be taken on.
The court declared several Dutch Accell companies bankrupt on 11 August. Following strong demand during the coronavirus years, the group was struggling with inventories, a declining market and the consequences of the recall involving Babboe cargo bikes.
Dutech is an investment group from Singapore. The company had previously been considered a possible buyer of Accell. An earlier takeover did not go ahead, but the German competition authority did approve the proposed combination in August.
According to the information available, the transaction now announced concerns the rights to Batavus, KOGA and Babboe, as well as some activities. This does not automatically mean that the entire Accell group has been sold. No complete overview has yet been published of the other brands, foreign business units and the deal's precise legal structure.
For customers, the situation will not change immediately in every respect. Statutory rights against the shop where a bicycle was bought remain in principle. However, the handling of manufacturer warranties, brand-specific parts and servicing will also depend partly on how Dutech continues the activities.
According to ANP, the IT platform and the Hungarian activities will transfer as well. This could help reorganise orders, parts and production, but says nothing yet about the scale of future production or the availability of all models.
The administrators reported in September that dozens of parties were interested in parts of Accell. The sale to Dutech is therefore an important next step, but no guarantee that all the former activities, jobs or products will fully return.
