HBO commissions Crazy Rich Asians sequel series
Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Ronny Chieng and Michelle Yeoh return in an eight-part drama series.
HBO has commissioned a sequel series to Crazy Rich Asians. The series continues after the 2018 film and brings together much of the original cast and creative team once again.
Warner Bros. Discovery reports that HBO has approved the series as an original drama, with one-hour episodes. The series is based on Kevin Kwan’s books and follows on from the events of the film Crazy Rich Asians.
Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Ronny Chieng return as regular cast members. Michelle Yeoh has a recurring role. Their characters from the film return in the same story universe. HBO has not yet announced a release date.
Adele Lim, who co-wrote the film, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Kevin Kwan, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson and director Jon M. Chu are also involved as producers. This keeps a significant part of the original creative team attached to the series.
According to Lim, the sequel series will have eight episodes. This gives the creators more room than a single feature film to develop the storylines from the books further. The announcement does not yet say which passages from the sequel books will be adapted.
The original film was released in 2018 and centred on Rachel Chu, who discovers during a visit to Singapore that her partner’s family is exceptionally wealthy and influential. The film became a significant commercial success for a Hollywood production with a predominantly Asian cast. The new series builds on that familiarity.
HBO has not yet provided information about when filming will begin, the locations or the release date. Nor has it announced which other actors will return. The confirmed cast and episode count are therefore currently the most important concrete details about the project.
The move shows how streaming companies want to expand familiar film universes in series form for longer. For HBO, the challenge lies in preserving the film’s recognisability while also offering enough new material. The series has been announced, but there have not yet been any substantive reactions or viewing figures.
