Isaias reaches Florida as major hurricane
The storm is bringing life-threatening storm surge and strong winds to the Florida Panhandle, according to US meteorologists.

Hurricane Isaias intensified into a major hurricane on Friday and was expected to reach Florida’s coast on Friday evening. The US weather service warned of strong winds, flooding and a storm surge of several metres along the Florida–Alabama border.
The National Hurricane Center reported maximum winds of 120 miles per hour at 10.00am local time on Friday, equivalent to about 195 kilometres per hour. Isaias’s centre was then approximately 310 kilometres south of Pensacola and was moving north-east at about 26 kilometres per hour.
A storm surge of 6 to 9 feet, roughly 1.8 to 2.7 metres, was expected for parts of the Florida Panhandle and the Alabama coast. The final water level depends on the precise track, the shape of the coast and when the storm coincides with the tide.
Local authorities urged residents in vulnerable coastal and low-lying areas to follow evacuation orders and safety instructions. In Santa Rosa County, toll charges on a bridge were among the measures suspended to facilitate departure from threatened areas.
The latest development follows an earlier report that Isaias had shut down part of US oil production. Attention is now shifting from the possible consequences for energy companies to the immediate risks to residents, emergency services, ports, roads and power networks.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency had stationed personnel at regional emergency centres in Florida and Alabama. According to AP, emergency teams were preparing for flooding and damage; their extent could not yet be reliably determined before the expected landfall.
A single weather event does not prove that climate change is the cause. It is, however, known that the intensity of tropical cyclones is influenced by multiple factors, including ocean temperatures and atmospheric conditions. For Isaias, the focus for now is on measurements, warnings and preparation.
