Meta bars TikTok advertising in seven countries
The measure also applies to third parties that advertise TikTok or other ByteDance services on Facebook and Instagram.
Meta has barred advertisements from ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, from Facebook and Instagram in the United States and six other countries. The company says the restriction takes effect immediately and also affects third-party campaigns containing links to TikTok.
According to Meta, the measure applies in the United States, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam. It concerns not only advertisements placed by ByteDance itself, but also paid campaigns by other advertisers that direct users to TikTok or other ByteDance services.
Meta says the company is not obliged to distribute advertising from a direct competitor. According to Reuters, the move fits into the longstanding competition between Meta and ByteDance for users, creators and advertising revenue.
TikTok and ByteDance did not immediately respond to questions from Reuters. The reporting on the measure is based on statements from Meta and an earlier report by Bloomberg. Reuters could not independently verify the earlier reporting, but later described confirmation by a Meta spokesperson.
For now, the restriction does not target advertisements in the Netherlands. Dutch companies running campaigns in one of the seven affected countries may nevertheless be affected when their advertisements refer to TikTok or other ByteDance services.
The move comes at a time when Meta and TikTok are publicly putting pressure on each other over the safety of minors. In the United States, Meta has reached agreements on stricter measures on Facebook and Instagram and is urging TikTok and YouTube to take similar steps.
For advertisers, the decision means that reach across several platforms is becoming less straightforward. According to the available information, nothing is changing for users’ access to TikTok itself. It concerns Meta’s advertising services, not a ban on the video app.
One story, several perspectives
What is established
- Meta has barred ByteDance advertisements in seven countries.
- The restriction also affects third parties linking to TikTok or other ByteDance services.
- TikTok did not immediately comment.
- The decision concerns Meta’s advertising services, not access to TikTok.
Left
Arguments The measure shows how much power large platforms have over reach and public communication. Supporters of stricter regulation would want transparency and oversight, so that commercial conflicts do not determine what information users see.
Values Limiting concentrations of power, consumer protection and fair digital markets.
Consequences More oversight could limit the abuse of platform power, but could also make decision-making slower and increase the cost of supervision.
Centre
Arguments A platform may manage its own advertising services, but must clearly explain which rules apply and apply them consistently. Competition policy and transparency are more important than unilateral public accusations.
Values Legal certainty, transparency and market forces.
Consequences Clear rules give advertisers predictability, while investigation remains necessary if the measure structurally disadvantages competitors.
Right
Arguments Meta does not have to provide a commercial service to a competitor that is trying to draw users away from its own platform. Companies should retain the freedom to determine their product strategy and advertising policy themselves.
Values Freedom of enterprise, freedom of contract and competition.
Consequences Less government intervention can stimulate innovation and competition, but can also lead to greater fragmentation of advertising markets.
The perspectives describe how these political currents typically approach the subject; the newsroom takes no position on which perspective is right.
