Stolen Renoirs recovered, six suspects arrested
The two paintings were stolen from the Musée Renoir in Cagnes-sur-Mer in September.
Two paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir that were stolen from a museum on the French Riviera last month have been recovered. French authorities have arrested six people in the investigation into the theft.
The recovered works are, according to Associated Press: Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano and Young Woman at the Well. They were stolen from the Musée Renoir in Cagnes-sur-Mer, a museum in the former home and studio of the Impressionist painter.
The theft took place on 8 September. According to the French Ministry of Culture, the perpetrator or perpetrators entered the museum and four paintings were taken. Two other works were abandoned during the escape. Police subsequently launched an investigation into the missing paintings and the museum’s security.
Six people were arrested in October. French police are investigating the case under the leadership of the specialised judicial authorities. Associated Press has not reported how the paintings were recovered or exactly where they were found. It is therefore not yet clear whether the works are undamaged or how long they were in the suspects’ possession.
RTL previously reported that five of the six people arrested could be linked to traces found on abandoned belongings. This concerns information from an ongoing investigation; the people arrested are suspects and have not been convicted. According to the sources consulted, no definitive assessment has yet been made of their precise role in the theft.
The case once again draws attention to the security of French museums. After the theft, the Ministry of Culture called for security to be strengthened in cultural institutions. This is a policy response to one specific incident and not evidence that all French museums are structurally unsafe.
The return of the works prevents two paintings from a public museum from remaining out of sight for an extended period. At the same time, the legal case has not yet been concluded. The next steps will have to establish how the works disappeared, who played what role and whether other people involved are still being sought.
