The AEX index reached a new intraday record on Monday and moved above 1,136 points. This happened despite falls in the share prices of Ahold Delhaize and ASML, two major constituents of the index.
Euronext recorded the AEX at 1,136.40 points on Monday afternoon, an increase of 0.48 per cent. Later, the live index stood slightly higher still. This took the main benchmark above the intraday level of approximately 1,135.76 points recorded the previous week.
The rise was not broad enough to lift all major Dutch listed companies. Ahold Delhaize was down by approximately 2.5 per cent in afternoon trading, while ASML lost approximately 1.7 per cent. Other constituents also recorded losses, while Adyen and Wolters Kluwer were among those trading higher.
An index is a weighted basket of shares. As a result, the AEX can rise if enough heavily weighted constituents gain ground, even when other major companies fall. The record therefore says little about sentiment towards individual companies or about the financial situation of Dutch households and businesses.
At Ahold, there was also a security incident that had temporarily disrupted websites, apps and logistics systems belonging to the supermarket group. At ASML, the losses came on a day when the chip sector did not move in the same direction everywhere. A single day’s share price does not, in itself, establish the cause of those movements.
The AEX therefore once again stood at a historically high level, but the difference between the index and individual shares underlines the limited significance of a record for the economy as a whole. Investors look at future profits, interest rates, global trade and corporate expectations; those factors can have different effects on each company.
To determine whether a new record close has also been reached, the closing level matters more than an interim peak. The available market data confirm a new intraday record on Monday. The exact closing level may differ slightly between data providers because of processing times and rounding.
