The Surinamese Football Association (SVB) reacted strongly on Sunday to criticism from Fortuna Sittard coach Danny Buijs. He believes his midfielder Shiloh ’t Zand was overworked during the international break and that communication with the association fell short.
According to VoetbalPrimeur, ’t Zand played three matches for Suriname during the international break, totalling 254 minutes. Buijs said the player was in fact rebuilding his match fitness and that Fortuna had not been sufficiently involved beforehand in the agreements about his involvement.
According to that report, Buijs stressed that he did not want to obstruct ’t Zand’s international career. However, he believes clubs and national associations should coordinate better on how much a player can handle. Clubs generally have fewer replacements available, whereas a national team has more options, according to Buijs.
The SVB disputes that account. General manager Brian Tevreden says there was continuous contact between the association and Fortuna from 11 to 23 September, both with the medical staff and the technical leadership. According to Tevreden, Buijs was copied into emails about the situation from 13 to 20 September.
The association also says that Tevreden spoke by telephone to Fortuna director Joris Mathijsen on 20 September. The SVB therefore disputes the claim that there was no consultation. The association also accuses Buijs of raising the conflict through the media, even though direct contact was possible.
The SVB’s response turns the issue into not only a discussion about playing time, but also one about the division of responsibility. Buijs emphasises the physical protection of a player rebuilding his rhythm after a difficult period; the association stresses that, according to its own account, it did in fact consult with the club.
’t Zand is loaned to Fortuna Sittard by Feyenoord, where Buijs is head coach. He made his debut for Suriname during this international break. It is not known whether the dispute will affect future cooperation between Fortuna and the SVB.
