In August, Brazilians and businesses were able to reclaim around 5.8 billion real in forgotten funds held by financial institutions. According to new central bank figures, the amount rose by 2.6 per cent compared with July.
This includes money in closed current or savings accounts, terminated consortia and cooperatives, or amounts that institutions are required to repay to customers. The central bank manages the Sistema de Valores a Receber, a digital portal for individuals and businesses.
Of the August total, around 4.31 billion real was earmarked for 23.9 million individuals, according to reports. Businesses could collectively reclaim around 1.48 billion real, involving approximately 2.36 million companies. These are total amounts, not an average amount per person or business.
The available funds rose from approximately 5.65 billion real in July to 5.8 billion real in August. The increase came after the amount had previously fallen because some of the funds were used as part of Novo Desenrola, a debt-restructuring programme.
The figures do not mean that all the money has newly come into existence. They indicate how much the system showed as available for repayment at that point. The composition can change as new amounts are registered, citizens request money and institutions update their data.
The central bank warns users to use only the official system. Logging in is not required for the initial check; viewing and requesting an amount requires a gov.br account with the required security level. The bank says it does not send links or ask for passwords.
For Dutch readers, the report mainly offers an insight into the scale of Brazil’s digital financial services and how the government is trying to return dormant funds to citizens and businesses. The amount is not a new benefit: only people and companies with registered funds can claim their own money.
