Around four hundred public-broadcasting employees have asked the NPO to reconsider the Netherlands’ participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. The NPO recently announced that the Netherlands will return with a new entry from 2027 and that NOS will provide the coverage.
The letter, titled #NietMijnSongfestival, is addressed to the management and executive board of the Dutch Public Broadcasting system. The signatories say they cannot accept the decision and believe the NPO has listened insufficiently to employees who object to participation under the current circumstances.
The NPO announced that an independent team will select and oversee the Dutch entry. This separates responsibility for the act from responsibility for journalistic coverage. Under the plan, NOS will provide the preview, reporting and commentary for the semi-finals and final.
AVROTROS withdrew last month as the broadcaster responsible for the Dutch entry. According to the NPO, participation under the circumstances at the time no longer sufficiently reflected the broadcaster’s values. The NPO then took responsibility for participation itself and says it has reached agreements with the European Broadcasting Union on giving the festival a stronger unifying character.
The authors of the letter question that explanation. In their view, the wish to take part in an entertainment programme does not outweigh the political and moral objections attached to the event. They also criticise the way the decision was made. Seven broadcasters had already asked last week for clarification on issues including funding and the possibility of withdrawing without cost.
The NPO says participation instead creates scope to promote connection and dialogue. Board chair Jette de Ranitz points out that the festival was originally founded to bring European countries together after the Second World War. The broadcaster also says it wants to accommodate the large group of Dutch fans who wish to continue following the festival.
The festival will take place in May 2027 in the Bulgarian city of Burgas. It is not yet known who will represent the Netherlands. The strongly worded letter does not alter the NPO’s formal decision, but it does show that the public broadcaster remains internally divided over whether participation is compatible with journalistic independence, social responsibility and the values of the public-broadcasting system.
One story, several perspectives
What is established
- The NPO has announced participation from 2027.
- AVROTROS previously withdrew as the broadcaster responsible for the entry.
- Around four hundred employees have asked the NPO not to take part.
- The NPO is separating selection of the entry from journalistic coverage by NOS.
Left
Arguments According to this approach, the public broadcaster should not legitimise an entertainment programme when participation is seen as normalising serious political conflicts. Employees and broadcasters should retain the option not to cooperate on moral grounds.
Values Human rights, solidarity with victims and institutional responsibility.
Consequences A boycott could protect reputation and credibility, but would also mean that the public broadcaster had less influence on the festival and missed part of its audience.
Centre
Arguments The NPO can institutionally separate participation and journalistic coverage while pressing within the EBU for better rules. The festival can thereby remain a platform for dialogue without all employees having to make the same moral choice.
Values Pluralism, independent journalism and the unifying public-service role.
Consequences This route keeps participation possible, but requires transparent decision-making, clear funding and guarantees that coverage will not be influenced by the entry.
Right
Arguments The public broadcaster should cater for a broad audience and should not adopt a collective political position at every international event. Participation is also culturally and socially relevant and need not amount to endorsing the policies of a participating country.
Values Freedom of culture, public reach and institutional neutrality.
Consequences Continuing prevents the broadcaster from withdrawing from a major European event, but may continue to prompt internal and external criticism over the boundaries of neutrality.
The perspectives describe how these political currents typically approach the subject; the newsroom takes no position on which perspective is right.
