Onze.nl now processes both voices

The provider is extending its AI service to the other caller’s voice and is also making the function available to businesses.

Mobile provider Onze.nl will henceforth also process the voice of the other party in a call. The expansion has applied since Tuesday and automatically produces a report from ordinary phone calls with a transcript, summary and action points.

Onze.nl already offered a function that processed the voice of its own subscriber. Following the expansion, both sides of the conversation are recorded and transcribed. Afterwards, the subscriber receives an email with a summary, the full transcript and action points.

The service works via an Onze.nl SIM card or eSIM and does not require a separate app. Calls via WhatsApp, Signal, FaceTime and Teams are outside the function because they do not run through the provider’s mobile calling service. Users can switch Onze AI on or off in their customer environment.

According to the business product information, the calls and AI processing take place within the European Economic Area. Onze.nl says audio recordings are retained for a maximum of thirty days. According to the information, transcripts and summaries may remain available throughout the customer relationship, unless other arrangements apply.

Onze.nl is also making the function available to businesses as part of the expansion. The provider stipulates that business users must inform conversation partners in advance about the recording, the AI processing and its purpose. Companies must also determine themselves on what legal basis they process personal data.

This means responsibility does not lie solely with the person who activates the function. The voice of a conversation partner who is not an Onze.nl customer may also end up in a transcript. The provider says that those involved can request access to or deletion of the data, but also mentions exceptions, for example when the data is needed for a legal dispute.

An independent description of the expansion points out that the names of the AI suppliers used have not been made public. Onze.nl itself also warns that automatically generated texts may be incomplete or inaccurate. Important names, amounts and agreements should therefore be checked before they are entered into a customer file, schedule or contract.

The move forms part of a broader development in which telecoms providers offer AI functions directly through their networks. The distinction from an ordinary notes app is that the other voice is now processed as well. The practical benefit is less writing; the key open questions concern consent, retention periods, access to the reports and how errors are corrected.

One story, several perspectives

Centre

Arguments The function can be useful if organisations are transparent, restrict access and always have automatically generated reports checked by people.

Values Innovation with oversight, proportionality and practical feasibility.

Consequences A clear framework can preserve the benefits for accessibility and administration without every phone call automatically becoming a permanent file.

Right

Arguments People and businesses should be able to choose for themselves which tools they use, as long as the provider gives clear information and combats misuse.

Values Freedom of choice, entrepreneurship and technological progress.

Consequences Overly burdensome rules could put Dutch providers at a disadvantage; responsibility should therefore lie as much as possible with the user and the organisation.

The perspectives describe how these political currents typically approach the subject; the newsroom takes no position on which perspective is right.
