Talpa is taking the entertainment programme Buzz off NET5. The media company says there is insufficient prospect of further growth, despite interest in individual videos on social media.

Talpa announced on Wednesday that Buzz will no longer be broadcast after 23 October. The programme began on 7 September and was intended as a daily discussion of topics from entertainment, internet culture and social media.

In a statement, Talpa says individual clips on Instagram and TikTok are attracting good viewing figures, but that the programme’s results as a whole are lagging behind. The company therefore cites insufficient prospects for further growth as the reason for stopping.

Buzz was broadcast on NET5 from Monday to Friday. Iris Enthoven and Wiesje Hillen presented the programme together with a rotating panel. Défano Holwijn, Tim Senders and Julia van Reyendam, among others, were involved in the format from the outset.

At its launch, Talpa positioned Buzz as a television version of a group conversation about what is circulating online. The programme was intended to make internet trends, reality news and striking reports accessible to a wider television audience. Production was handled by Talpa TV Productions.

The decision follows weeks in which television media reported low viewing figures for NET5’s new early-evening schedule. According to Talpa, viewing figures were not the only measure: the company itself distinguishes between the reach of individual digital clips and the performance of the full broadcast.

During the same period, Talpa also launched True Crime Today. The company says that programme does have the potential to grow further. It is not yet known which programme will definitively take Buzz’s place on NET5 after 23 October.

The cancellation shows how difficult it is for traditional broadcasters to translate online topics into a daily television format. Digital clips can individually achieve substantial reach, while a full broadcast attracts too few viewers. For advertisers and makers, that combination makes it more difficult to measure success using a single viewing figure.
