John Porter will step down as Telenet’s chief executive on 2 November. His successor will be Rocío Lorenzo, who currently heads Cable & Wireless Panama and previously held various telecoms roles at Liberty Global.
Liberty Global, Telenet’s owner, announced the change on Wednesday. Porter will remain involved as an adviser until the end of 2026 to help oversee the handover. He will also remain chairman of Wyre, the network company Telenet founded together with Fluvius.
Porter has been at the helm of Telenet since 2013. Before that, he had already worked within Liberty Global for more than 30 years, including at Australian cable operator AUSTAR. Liberty Global says he helped transform Telenet from a traditional cable company into a telecommunications, media and entertainment business.
Lorenzo will begin as chair of Telenet’s board on 2 November. She has been a senior vice-president at Liberty Latin America since 2021 and managing director of Cable & Wireless Panama since 2024. According to Liberty Global, she has experience in telecommunications, technology, consumer businesses and the construction of mobile and fixed networks.
The appointment coincides with a new phase for Liberty Global’s Benelux group. Telenet and VodafoneZiggo are being brought together within the newly formed Ziggo Group. The owner says Lorenzo will report directly to Stephen van Rooyen, the chief executive of Ziggo Group.
The appointment will not automatically change anything for Dutch customers. Telenet is mainly active in Belgium, while VodafoneZiggo operates in the Netherlands. However, decisions on network strategy, commercial services and media offerings will henceforth be considered within a broader Benelux structure.
It is not yet known what impact the change will have on investment, prices or the further integration of the two companies. The announcement contains no new financial targets and gives no indication of changes to Telenet’s offering.
