Electronics retailer NBB, known as notebooksbilliger.de, is warning customers about a cyber-attack and a possible data breach. The Dutch online shop has been temporarily taken offline as a precaution while the scale of the incident is investigated.
NBB says that customers’ email addresses have been stolen, at least. According to the warning, some customers’ names, addresses and bank account numbers may also be involved. The company has not yet disclosed how many customers may have been affected.
The Dutch website NBB.com is temporarily unavailable, according to the company. NBB says it has taken protective measures and reported the incident to the authorities. The website says the site is offline for maintenance, but the company links the measure to the cyber-attack.
It is not yet clear when the attackers gained access or which systems were specifically affected. It has also not been established whether Dutch customers received the same warning as customers of the German online shop.
The possible combination of email addresses and payment details increases the risk of targeted phishing and fraudulent direct debits. That does not mean every customer has become a victim, but it makes extra vigilance advisable until NBB provides more clarity.
NBB is investigating the attack with external experts and the authorities involved. The company still has to inform customers about the definitive scale of the data breach and any possible next steps.
