Ukrainian drone units again faced restrictions on Starlink connections on Wednesday. Elon Musk then said that Starlink’s military variant is under the control of the US military and President Donald Trump.
Ukrainian officials reported that SpaceX had limited the connections of Starlink terminals on drones. As a result, some drones were less able to communicate quickly with their operators. According to Ukrainian sources, the restriction affected both attack drones and systems used for air defence.
According to Associated Press, the connections later improved on Wednesday to around 161 kilometres per hour. A Ukrainian official said, however, that this was still insufficient to properly intercept fast Russian drones. The US Pentagon and the US Space Force did not immediately publicly confirm what restrictions had been imposed.
Musk wrote on X that the military version, called Starshield, is controlled by the US military and Trump. He did not directly deny that a restriction had been imposed, but he did place responsibility with the US government. According to AP, the White House did not comment immediately.
The development follows new tensions between Washington and Kyiv. Trump has pressured Ukraine to halt attacks on Russian energy infrastructure. Ukrainian advisers therefore suspect that the restriction may be politically motivated, but no independent evidence has been made public for that conclusion.
Starlink is important to Ukraine for communication at the front, logistics and the operation of drones. At the same time, dependence on a single commercial satellite network makes the military infrastructure vulnerable to decisions by a company or government outside Ukraine.
The US and Ukrainian governments also contradict each other over the wider exchange of information. Kyiv previously said it had received no warning of a Russian missile attack, while a Ukrainian parliamentarian told AP that the exchange with international partners had not stopped completely. It is therefore still unclear whether the Starlink restriction is part of a broader decision or a separate technical or military measure.
One story, several perspectives
What is established
- Ukraine reported restrictions on Starlink connections for military drones.
- Musk referred to the US military and Donald Trump in connection with the military variant.
- It has not been established exactly who imposed the restriction or why.
Left
Arguments Critical infrastructure for warfare should not depend on a commercial network whose owner or a foreign president can restrict access.
Values Democratic oversight, public accountability and protection of Ukrainian sovereignty come first.
Consequences Without public oversight, military and humanitarian decisions can be influenced by private interests or political pressure.
Centre
Arguments The military chain of responsibility must first be clarified before political conclusions are drawn. Allies must establish agreements on access, oversight and emergency procedures.
Values Institutional diligence, allied reliability and verifiable decision-making.
Consequences An investigation could prevent escalation, but prolonged uncertainty could harm Ukraine’s operational planning and trust between allies.
Right
Arguments Military communications ultimately fall under national security interests. The United States may set conditions for systems that it funds or manages militarily.
Values National security, allied discipline and protection of American resources.
Consequences Strict conditions could strengthen the US negotiating position, but an abrupt restriction could also damage the credibility of American support.
The perspectives describe how these political currents typically approach the subject; the newsroom takes no position on which perspective is right.
