The Intelligent Community Forum has named Brightlands Limburg Intelligent Community of the Year 2026. The award was presented at the summit in Ohio. The frequently used description ‘smartest region in the world’ is an award title, not a general ranking of intelligence or economic performance.
The province of Limburg announced the award on Friday. The regional magazine Chapeau also reported the victory, stating that the announcement took place overnight, Dutch time. The organiser had announced the final for 15 October in Columbus. Brightlands Limburg finished ahead of six other finalists from different parts of the world.
Collaboration between businesses, knowledge institutions and public authorities is central to Limburg’s entry. The four Brightlands campuses are located in Heerlen, Maastricht, Sittard-Geleen and Venlo. According to the province, the ICF particularly values the connections between these locations and the way they work together on social and economic issues. The award therefore recognises a regional network, rather than a single company or an individual invention.
Chapeau lists the circular economy, healthcare, artificial intelligence, smart services, and agriculture and food among the areas of work involved. Efforts surrounding the Einstein Telescope are also mentioned as part of Limburg’s profile. This is not an announcement that the instrument is already being built in Limburg: it refers to efforts to bring it there and the project’s place in the region’s ambitions.
The selection process has several stages. According to the ICF’s own explanation, participating communities complete an extensive questionnaire. An international academic team assesses the answers against dozens of factors and produces a ranking on that basis. Seven candidates reach the final. The eventual winner is chosen following additional analysis, visits by the organisation’s founders and a vote by an international jury.
The ICF itself makes an important qualification about the significance of its selection. The finalists are not necessarily the most technologically advanced areas or the fastest-growing economies. The organisation seeks examples of broadband use, workforce development, innovation and digital accessibility. The title therefore reflects the assessment within this programme and does not prove that Limburg leads in every economic or technological field.
The place in the final had already been announced in June during a meeting in Limburg. The other candidates were Assaí, Bursa, Hilliard, Kingston, Las Rozas de Madrid and Yunlin County. The new development is the eventual victory. According to the province, Limburg is the first Dutch winner since Brainport Eindhoven in 2011. This brings international recognition for the institutions involved; the reports consulted do not substantiate any specific additional investment or jobs resulting from the award. Such economic effects will need to be demonstrated separately.

Editor's note
The province and regional reporting confirm the winner. The local event date follows from the announcement for 15 October and the report on 16 October referring to the previous night. No good-news label: the award does not in itself prove any measurable improvement in society.Sources
