A Brazilian man travelled to Belo Horizonte after seeking online contact with a profile that appeared to represent a woman. The account administrator now says that the persona was created using artificial intelligence, but important details about the private messages have not been independently established.
The man, a 49-year-old construction worker from Maranhão, reportedly told public media that in 2020 he had found a social media account featuring videos of a woman calling herself Jéssica Oliveira. According to those reports, he believed he could build a relationship with her.
According to a reconstruction of the case, he travelled more than 2,000 kilometres to Belo Horizonte. There, he had neither an address nor a concrete arrangement to meet the woman.
On 14 October, the account administrator posted a video in which the digital persona says that she was created using artificial intelligence. The administrator says the account was intended to stimulate engagement and sales.
Exactly what was written in the private conversations has not been established. According to the reconstruction consulted, a Brazilian police unit said it had received no report of the case and could not establish whether a criminal offence had been committed.
This is therefore not a proven example of a criminal AI fraud case. The administrator’s statement about the AI persona does not clarify with whom the man communicated privately.
The available sources are journalistic and specialist reconstructions, not an independent police report. The story should therefore be treated with caution. What is chiefly established is that a man travelled to Belo Horizonte and that the account administrator later described the persona as AI-generated.

One story, several perspectives

- The administrator later described the depicted persona as AI-generated.
- According to the available source, the police did not establish that a criminal offence had been committed.
Left
Arguments Platforms should take greater responsibility for misleading synthetic profiles and not leave users to bear the consequences alone.
Values Consumer protection, digital equality and protection of vulnerable users.
Consequences Stricter transparency and reporting rules could limit harm, but would also impose heavier monitoring costs on platforms.
Centre
Arguments There is a need for clear labels and better reporting procedures, but the facts of individual cases must first be established carefully.
Values Proportionality, evidence and workable rules.
Consequences A step-by-step approach can address deception without unnecessarily blocking legitimate creative AI applications.
Right
Arguments Users and companies must remain critical themselves and should not turn every disappointing online interaction into a matter for the government.
Values Personal responsibility, freedom to do business and restrained government intervention.
Consequences Fewer rules keep innovation open, but may fail to adequately protect people who find digital signals difficult to assess.
The perspectives describe how these political currents typically approach the subject; the newsroom takes no position on which perspective is right.

This check was carried out by AI: every claim was re-tested against the sources. Even an approved article can contain errors — stay critical.
The text sticks to what two public reconstructions report and explicitly marks unconfirmed elements. Because there is no independent police report, the subject has been classified as insufficiently substantiated.
- confirmed The man travelled more than 2,000 kilometres to Belo Horizonte. — Reported in both reconstructions consulted. source
- confirmed The account administrator said that the persona was created using AI. — The administrator’s statement is described in the available sources. source
- confirmed There is no independent evidence that the private messages were sent by the persona herself. — The source reports that it has not been established who wrote the private messages. source
Editor's note
The journey and the account administrator’s statement have been described in public sources. Independent confirmation of the private messages, any harm and a criminal offence is lacking.Sources
