Six suspects have been arrested in the investigation into the death of Belgian police officer Nordine El Talbi. The Brussels public prosecutor’s office announced on Sunday that one suspect was arrested in Paris, three in Almería and two in Belgium.

El Talbi, a member of the anti-robbery squad of the Brussels-Capital-Ixelles police zone, was killed on Monday during an intervention in Jette. He was investigating a vehicle there that had previously been used in a carjacking in Tubize.

According to the Brussels public prosecutor’s office, the suspects comprise five adults and one minor. Five of the six are believed to have been in the vehicle involved. They are suspected of murder and criminal association; a judge has yet to rule on their guilt.

According to BRUZZ, French police arrested a suspect wanted internationally at a railway station in Paris, and Belgium has requested his extradition. Three others were arrested in Almería by Spain’s Guardia Civil, according to BRUZZ. BRUZZ reports that Belgium has also requested their transfer.

The two remaining suspects were arrested in Belgium. The public prosecutor’s office says that several suspects are known to the justice system for drug-related offences, but has provided no further details about each person’s precise role. The public prosecutor’s office has given no clarity about the motives.

The investigation is still under way. The public prosecutor’s office mentions, among other things, ballistic and DNA testing. The new arrests are a clear development compared with the previous state of affairs, but in themselves say nothing about the suspects’ eventual guilt.

One story, several perspectives
What is established

  • Six suspects have been arrested in Belgium, France and Spain.
  • The investigation into the suspects’ precise roles and guilt is ongoing.
Centre

Arguments A centrist approach emphasises professional investigation, cooperation between the Belgian, French and Spanish authorities and due process. The facts must first be established technically and legally.

Values The rule of law, international cooperation and due process.

Consequences A cross-border investigation can locate suspects more quickly, but extradition procedures and scrutiny of evidence may take time.

Right

Arguments This perspective emphasises protecting police and civilians, taking firm action against drug networks and the swift extradition of suspects. The authority of the state must remain visible after violence against an officer.

Values Public order, security and responsibility.

Consequences More intensive investigations and tougher sentences may act as a deterrent, but also raise questions about proportionality and the treatment of minor suspects.

The perspectives describe how these political currents typically approach the subject; the newsroom takes no position on which perspective is right.
