In Wichita, in the US state of Kansas, a pick-up truck drove into people during a football match on Saturday. Two people died and eleven others were taken to hospitals, police said.

According to police, the incident happened at a sports complex in Wichita while a youth match was being played. Police said a six-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man died. Eleven other people were injured; according to the authorities, their ages range from five to 68.

The driver is a 34-year-old woman. She has been arrested. Two children were also in the truck, according to police. The authorities have not yet established why the vehicle drove onto the pitch and say there is currently no indication that this was a deliberate attack.

Police are investigating, among other things, what happened and the circumstances surrounding the driver and the vehicle. There has been no report of any further threat to the public after the incident. The sports complex was temporarily closed for the investigation.

According to police, bystanders immediately provided assistance before the first emergency responders arrived. The mayor of Wichita called the news heartbreaking and asked people to avoid the area while the investigation continued.

As the investigation is still under way, important questions remain unanswered. It is unclear whether technical, medical or other circumstances played a role. The arrested driver is considered a suspect; no judgement has yet been made about her motive or any possible guilt.
