Deaths and injuries were reported on Saturday following an incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta. A major fire spread beyond the base grounds; little is yet known about the cause or the extent of the damage.
Canadian Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed on Saturday evening that there had been casualties in an incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright. He gave no figure and provided no details about exactly what had happened.
According to McGuinty, the Canadian armed forces, the federal government, the province of Alberta and local authorities are working together on the emergency response. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is also involved in the investigation. The minister described the situation as dynamic and sensitive, and said more information was expected later.
According to the Municipal District of Wainwright, strong winds caused the fire to spread beyond the base’s perimeter fence. Fire services from several areas were deployed. Local authorities said the fire was located south of Township Road 44-0.
As far as was known on Saturday evening, no evacuation order was in force. Residents were asked to avoid the area and keep roads clear for emergency services. Local health authorities also urged people to visit the Wainwright Health Centre only if medically necessary.
The fire also affected a location where voters could cast their ballots early in the provincial elections. Elections Alberta reported that the polling station at the Wainwright Communiplex had been closed because of the situation.
Wainwright lies about 200 kilometres south-east of Edmonton. The base is one of Canada’s main military training grounds and is home, among other units, to the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre. Canadian troops train there for large-scale operations. The authorities have not yet said whether the incident was connected to a military exercise, an explosion or another cause; such reports have not been officially confirmed.
