A 50-year-old resident of Terneuzen died in the early hours of Sunday in a major fire at a tower block on Diepenbrockstraat. Firefighters checked the building up to and including the seventh floor.
The fire broke out in an apartment at around 10.25 pm on Saturday evening. According to regional reports, the incident was shortly afterwards escalated to a major fire and then to a very major fire. The source said that four fire engines and an aerial platform were deployed; a trauma helicopter was also called in to provide medical support.
The fire was under control by around 10.50 pm, according to HVZeeland. According to the same report, firefighters then checked the tower block and ventilated the rooms. The report also said that smoke had spread through the complex, meaning residents could not immediately return to their homes.
A 50-year-old man from Terneuzen was found downstairs near the tower block. Emergency workers were unable to save him. Police announced his death at around 1.20 am. Accommodation was arranged for residents at De Vliegende Vaart sports centre.
According to Omroep ZVL, several dozen residents were taken by fire service minibus to the accommodation location; others went there independently. The regional reports also state that Stichting Salvage was called in to help residents deal with the damage and that mayor Franc Weerwind visited the site.
It had not yet been established in the morning exactly how many homes had been affected by fire or smoke. The regional reports say that firefighters checked the building floor by floor, but give no definitive number of evacuated residents. The cause of the fire had also not been announced.
It remains unclear when all residents will be able to return and how extensive the damage to their homes is. Until the cause and exact extent of the damage have been established, it is too early to draw conclusions about the complex's fire safety or possible liability.
