The United States has urged Israel to take stronger action against violence by Israeli settlers in the West Bank. The appeal follows an attack in which American photographer Heidi Levine was injured during the olive harvest.
The US ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, described the violence as a serious attack by masked assailants, according to the Associated Press. Levine, a photographer for The Washington Post, reportedly had to undergo surgery.
The attack took place during a period in which Palestinian villages and foreign visitors faced violence surrounding the annual olive harvest. AP reported that Palestinians were also injured and that vehicles and trees were damaged.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington wanted to see Israel take action against the violence. In response to the incident, the US government contacted the newspaper and requested information about the attack.
Israeli military and police services condemned the violence and said they were investigating. At the same time, Israeli authorities said that some visits by foreign diplomats in the area had not been coordinated with the army in advance.
The issue comes shortly after a separate attack on European diplomats in the same area. That development has increased international pressure on Israel to prosecute perpetrators of settler violence and better protect foreign representatives.
The new US appeal is therefore more than a repetition of earlier condemnations: Washington explicitly links the attack on an American journalist to the demand for Israeli enforcement. It is not yet known whether this will lead to arrests, prosecutions or policy changes.
The responsibility of individual attackers must be established through investigation and the courts. The reporting contains statements from American, Israeli and Palestinian parties, but no final judicial ruling has yet been reached.

One story, several perspectives
What is established
- An American journalist was injured in violence in the West Bank.
- American officials are asking Israel to take stronger action and prosecute perpetrators.
- Israeli authorities say they condemn the violence and are investigating.
- There is not yet a final ruling on individual suspects.
Left
Arguments This perspective sees the violence as the result of prolonged occupation, unequal legal protection and settlement expansion. The US should use its influence to hold Israel accountable.
Values Equal legal protection, human rights and international accountability.
Consequences Sanctions or diplomatic pressure could improve protection, but could further strain relations between Washington and Jerusalem.
Centre
Arguments The institutional approach calls for an independent investigation, prosecution of proven perpetrators and protection for journalists and diplomats, without assigning collective blame.
Values The rule of law, proportionality and administrative responsibility.
Consequences Targeted prosecutions could limit escalation, but require demonstrable enforcement and reliable access to the area.
Right
Arguments This perspective emphasises Israel’s security interests and the risk that international pressure is applied one-sidedly. At the same time, violence by civilians must be addressed because it harms Israel’s legitimacy and security.
Values Security, national sovereignty and the maintenance of order.
Consequences A firm but targeted approach could preserve alliances; broad sanctions could complicate cooperation and security coordination.
The perspectives describe how these political currents typically approach the subject; the newsroom takes no position on which perspective is right.
