AI company Anthropic wants to place five per cent of its shares in a new public-interest fund. The transfer still requires shareholder approval and could be expanded if the company’s value rises.
Anthropic announced the plan on Sunday. According to Anthropic, the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund will be an LLC wholly owned by the company. Anthropic says this structure could allow donations to civil-society organisations or direct payments to certain groups.
The company cites the impact of AI on the labour market as a possible area of work. Anthropic says it has already pledged 200 million dollars for research into and efforts to address those effects. According to the company, the fund could later also support other public-interest goals.
The value of the fund is not fixed, because Anthropic’s valuation may change. The company also intends to announce further details about the governance, conditions and valuation thresholds that could lead to additional shares.
According to the announcement, the board could add a further two per cent of the shares for every 50 per cent increase above a specified baseline value. Anthropic says the fund’s shares will not be used for lobbying or political donations.
Anthropic still needs shareholder approval for the share transfer. The company presents the fund as part of its identity as a public benefit corporation, a legal form in which a social purpose is considered alongside profit. Independent oversight of the new fund has not yet been worked out.

- The transfer requires shareholder approval.
- The fund will be an LLC wholly owned by Anthropic, and its governance will be worked out later.
Left
Arguments Large AI companies should use part of their economic gains for workers, public services and groups affected by automation.
Values Distribution, social protection and public accountability.
Consequences A fund could be useful, but without independent oversight it could primarily serve the company’s reputation.
Centre
Arguments A flexible fund can respond more quickly than legislation, but it should have transparent goals, oversight and reporting, and must not become a substitute for public regulation.
Values Pragmatism, transparency and institutional responsibility.
Consequences Clear governance could enable social experimentation; uncertainty could damage trust and shareholder value.
Right
Arguments Private companies may voluntarily support social goals, but the government should not become dependent on donations from technology companies.
Values Ownership, voluntarism and limited concentration of power.
Consequences A fund could finance innovation and assistance, but too much influence by one company over public choices is risky.
