German Sparkassen are gradually introducing crypto trading for retail customers. According to n-tv, the first institutions are offering bitcoin and ethereum, among others.
The German savings bank group is incorporating crypto trading into its existing digital services. Customers of participating Sparkassen can use the banking app to trade cryptocurrencies that until now were mainly bought through specialised trading platforms.
According to reports by n-tv, the initial offering consists of bitcoin and ethereum. It remains uncertain whether XRP, solana and polygon will also become available at the first participating institutions.
The introduction is not taking place at all Sparkassen at once. According to information attributed to the German savings bank association DSGV, new institutions are joining each month. A large proportion of the interested banks are expected to follow in the first half of 2027.
The move makes crypto trading more accessible to customers who already bank with a traditional institution. As a result, the boundary between conventional financial services and digital asset products is becoming less distinct.
That does not mean the risk disappears. Cryptocurrencies can fluctuate sharply in value and do not fall under the same protection as an ordinary bank account. The entry of banks changes nothing about the nature of the product.
For German banks, the development is also a competitive response. Smartphone banks and trading apps have been offering crypto trading for longer. The Sparkassen are trying to retain their position as the main bank for retail customers.
The Dutch market is not directly changed by this launch. The development does show, however, that crypto services are moving further from specialised platforms towards mainstream financial institutions.

The launch and phased introduction have been described by two public sources. The cryptocurrencies mentioned differ between sources and have therefore been presented as the initial offering, not as a definitive offering for all banks.Sources
