The German government and chipmaker Nvidia are to work more closely together on industrial artificial intelligence. The government announced this during an investment conference in Berlin, where Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang appeared together.

According to the German government, the partnership forms part of its strategy to attract new investment and modernise industry. The conference, the German government says, is focused among other things on industrial AI, semiconductors, data centres and infrastructure. The precise scope and financial terms of the partnership have not been fully set out in the public announcement.

According to the AP news agency, Huang said that German manufacturers need to link their existing expertise in cars, machinery and robots more effectively with digital technology. He stressed that, in his view, AI is not only about chatbots, but is increasingly being used in factories, robots and vehicles.

The stakes are high for Germany. The economy relies heavily on industry and exports, while companies are also dealing with high energy costs, international competition and weak demand in several important markets. The government is therefore trying to bring private investment back to technology and production.

Nvidia mainly supplies chips and software for AI systems. The company does not itself build most of the end products in which that technology is used, but its hardware is an important component of many large AI systems. A partnership could therefore affect German machine builders, car manufacturers and suppliers.

The announcement does not yet say how many jobs or investments the agreement will generate. Nor is it clear which projects will be carried out first. The coming period will show whether the partnership remains chiefly a political statement of intent or leads to concrete factories, research programmes and commercial applications.

  • The announcement took place during a German investment conference.
  • The financial scale and concrete projects are not yet fully known.
Centre

Arguments A partnership with Nvidia could be useful if it delivers concrete investment, research and productivity growth, but transparent agreements and European regulation remain necessary.

Values Competitiveness, feasibility and institutional oversight.

Consequences Germany could reduce its industrial disadvantage, but would remain dependent on a foreign technology company.

Right

Arguments Germany must modernise its industry quickly and prevent regulation from driving companies to other countries.

Values Economic growth, entrepreneurship and national industrial strength.

Consequences Faster adoption could support jobs and exports; too much oversight could delay investment.

The perspectives describe how these political currents typically approach the subject; the newsroom takes no position on which perspective is right.
