Rheinmetall and Swiss shipping company MSC have won the auction for the Romanian Mangalia shipyard. The companies will pay around €138 million together and want to develop the site for civil and military shipbuilding.

Rheinmetall announced on Monday that it had won the tender for the Mangalia shipyard together with MSC. According to the German defence company, the takeover should be completed within a few weeks.

The shipyard is located on the Black Sea, south of the Romanian port city of Constanța. The site has been the subject of insolvency proceedings since Damen Mangalia ran into financial difficulties.

Rheinmetall wants to divide the shipyard into various sectors and security zones. This should create space for both civil shipbuilding and military production.

For Rheinmetall Naval Systems, the site is also important for building four naval vessels ordered by the Romanian government. The company is thus presenting Mangalia as a strategic production site for Romania and the wider region.

As an international shipping company, MSC brings experience in civil shipping. According to the companies involved, the combination should prevent the shipyard from becoming entirely dependent on defence orders.

The announcement is a new step in a case in which Dutch company Damen previously held a stake. The new development is not only a transfer of ownership, but also a choice of a mixed industrial profile.

For the region, the key question is whether the new owner can actually restore production and employment at the shipyard. The announcement contains no detailed plan yet for employee numbers, investment or the full schedule for the military orders.
