The Balearic authorities suspended lessons on Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera on Monday. The decision followed warnings of very heavy rainfall caused by Storm Adam, after Spain had already been hit by severe weather.
According to the regional government of the Balearic Islands, it decided on Sunday evening that schools on Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera would remain closed on Monday. The authorities said there was a risk of flooding and that unnecessary travel during the severe weather could not be justified.
The Spanish meteorological service AEMET forecast very intense rainfall in parts of the islands. Some areas were expected to receive up to 140 litres per square metre in twelve hours on Mallorca and up to 160 litres on the Pitiusas.
The regional emergency services temporarily raised the warning level for parts of the islands to red. In the early hours of Monday, the highest warning level for Mallorca was lowered back to orange after the expected intensity of the rain had decreased.
The closure of the schools is a new development within the same weather system that had already affected parts of Spain over the past weekend. The authorities stress that the measure is precautionary and intended to expose pupils, staff and emergency services to as little additional risk as possible.
On the Spanish mainland and the islands, the situation continued to vary from place to place. Not everywhere received the same amount of rain, and warnings were adjusted during the morning. As a result, the actual disruption may differ greatly from one municipality to another.
For travellers, the storm mainly means that local authorities may quickly adjust access to facilities and roads. Reports about the earlier fatal incident near Barcelona are separate from this new administrative measure in the Balearic Islands, although both developments occurred during the same period of unsettled weather in Spain.
