Frans Timmermans is to become the new chair of the supervisory board of Dierenbescherming. The members’ council approved his nomination last weekend; Timmermans starts on 1 January 2027.
The appointment was announced on Monday. Timmermans was previously vice-president of the European Commission and leader of GroenLinks-PvdA. After leaving national politics, he is now taking on a supervisory role at an organisation concerned with animal welfare and animal protection in the Netherlands.
Timmermans succeeds Karin Broekhuizen. Her second term as chair of the supervisory board ends at the close of this year. The board oversees the management, acts as employer and also has an advisory role.
Dierenbescherming says Timmermans’s administrative and social experience fits the organisation’s ambitions. Timmermans calls the appointment an honour and says he wants to contribute to protecting animals and ensuring they are treated in an animal-friendly way.
A supervisory board does not run the organisation on a day-to-day basis. Day-to-day management remains the responsibility of the executive. The supervisors monitor, among other things, strategy, financial continuity and the performance of the management board.
The appointment comes at a time when animal welfare is regularly part of political and social debates about agriculture, pets, nature and oversight. Timmermans brings experience of European regulation and public decision-making from his political career, but his new role is not a political management position.
The organisation has not disclosed which specific policy priorities Timmermans wants to pursue as chair. Nor is it yet clear how, under his chairmanship, the board intends to shape the balance between advocacy, supervision and members’ participation.
