Amazon plans to invest more than €16 billion in Germany in 2027. The company announced the figure on Tuesday at the Invest in Germany summit in Berlin.

According to Amazon, the investments concern various areas of the business. The company mentions cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence, satellite internet, logistics and media production, among others. Some of the amount concerns the expansion of existing activities; it is unclear how much will ultimately create new physical assets or jobs.

Amazon also says it has invested more than €100 billion in Germany since 2010. This is a figure provided by Amazon itself. The announced €16 billion concerns a plan for 2027, not money that has already been spent.

For the Netherlands, the expansion of data centres and cloud infrastructure is particularly relevant. German cloud regions are also used by European companies and government organisations. Greater capacity may increase the availability of cloud services, but at the same time may raise demand for electricity, grid connections and water.

The investment fits Germany’s strategy of attracting foreign companies. The government presented several corporate plans during the same summit. Berlin is thereby seeking to establish Germany as a location for technology, industry and energy-intensive activities.

The announcement says little yet about the ultimate economic return. That will depend on implementation, the precise locations, permits and whether the investments actually produce additional employment and output. It is also not known how much public support or tax benefits are involved in individual projects.
